Wow… Just 5 Weeks Left of the 2025–2026 Academic Year!
It only feels like yesterday that schools were opening their gates for the start of a new academic year.
Yet here we are, with just five weeks remaining until the end of the 2025–2026 academic year.
For many Premises Managers, Site Teams, Facilities Professionals, Business Managers and School Leaders, this period marks one of the busiest and most important times of the year.
While pupils and staff begin looking forward to the summer holidays, facilities teams are already planning what comes next.
Reflecting on the Year
The past academic year has brought its fair share of challenges and achievements.
From managing day-to-day operations and responding to emergencies, to maintaining compliance and supporting school events, site teams have continued to play a vital role behind the scenes.
Many schools have successfully delivered:
β
Planned maintenance programmes
β
Capital improvement projects
β
Compliance inspections
β
Energy-saving initiatives
β
Community lettings and events
β
Enhanced safeguarding and security measures
These achievements are often made possible through the dedication of premises and facilities teams who work tirelessly throughout the year.
The Final Five Weeks Matter
The last few weeks of term are often the most demanding.
Schools are preparing for:
- Sports Days
- Summer Fairs
- Year 6 Productions
- Residential Trips
- Awards Evenings
- End-of-Term Events
- Transition Days
- Staff Leavers and New Starters
At the same time, facilities teams must continue to ensure:
β Buildings remain safe and compliant
β Grounds are maintained
β Contractors are managed effectively
β Security arrangements remain robust
β Planned maintenance continues uninterrupted
Looking Ahead to Summer
Now is the perfect time to start preparing for the summer holiday period.
Consider:
π§ Summer Maintenance Projects
Identify works that can only be completed when the building is unoccupied.
π§Ή Deep Cleaning Programmes
Schedule cleaning activities early to maximise available time.
π Compliance Planning
Review inspection dates and book contractors well in advance.
π³ Grounds Maintenance
Plan summer grounds works ready for September.
π« New Academic Year Preparation
Ensure classrooms, offices and communal spaces are ready for staff and pupils returning in September.
A Thank You to School Site Teams
At PMGS, we recognise the incredible work undertaken by school premises and facilities professionals every day.
Whether you’re unlocking gates at dawn, responding to an emergency call-out late at night, coordinating contractors, maintaining compliance records, or ensuring a safe learning environment for pupils and staff, your contribution is invaluable.
The work may often go unnoticed, but schools simply could not function without it.
Final Thoughts
Five weeks may seem like a long time, but in the world of school estates and facilities management, it will pass quickly.
Use the remaining weeks wisely, finish strong, celebrate achievements, and start planning for a productive summer period.
Before long, September will be here, and another academic year will begin.
